Seven years: part of me is in complete disbelief that that many years have passed since I cradled my little tiny AJ in my arms for the first time. I remember looking down at him, through eyes heavy with exhaustion and blurred with tears in the early hours of the morning, the hospital room was quiet and dark, thinking oh my goodness, what do I do now?
So much has changed since that day. It almost feels like in that moment he grabbed a tiny piece of me and has slowly unravelled who I am day by day, twisting and turning parts of me that in some ways have now been completely redefined.
Sometimes I feel like saying that I love him is far from enough. It is an all-consuming, overwhelming, ache that I have for him that perhaps draws a little closer to how much I do love him.
On this birthday, while we have run around preparing cake stands, cutting out minions and making sure all the blue and yellow details were just perfect for him, I have stepped back just to soak it all in. This birthday AJ has been a little different, a little more grown up than other birthdays.
I am starting to see glimpses of the person I hope he grows up to be; glimpses of maturity, confidence, independence and an all-knowing about things. More often than not he leaves me feeling so proud of him and so taken aback by the truly awesome little man he is growing up to be.
I often still feel like some days leave me questioning what do I do now? Just like that blessed morning when he was born. I guess the difference now is that I feel like we are really doing this together, like a team, and I really couldn’t think of anything better.
Gosh I could write pages and pages of wishes that I have for him on his birthday. Instead, I will write just one: always believe that anything is possible my little man, I am your biggest fan xx
I am overwhelmed every year by the amazing talents of everyone who comes together to create such spectacular birthdays for my beautiful boys. The generosity of spirit and love that these amazing individuals show is a blessing that I am truly grateful for.
